The College of Arts and Letters Film Series continues the themes of families, with “Fam- ilies: Not Family Friendly.” Paul Helford and Paul
Donnelly provide a framework for students and local cinephiles to meet and discuss films. A lo- cal film fan will provide an introduction and following the film a healthy exchange of ideas ensues. Films are on Tuesday evening at NAU’s Cline Library at 7PM for free. (Park behind li- brary for free!)
1/15/13 — Captain Courageous, directed by Victor Fleming, 1937, NR, 115 minutes; starring Spencer Tracy and Freddie Bartholomew. A rich spoiled child from the upper crust embarks on an ocean cruise with his father. When he falls overboard and is rescued by a fishing boat, his life changes and he begins a sea adventure that will educate him to the meaning of life. Spencer Tracy took home his first Oscar for the portrayal of Captain Courageous.
1/22/13 — My Favorite Wife, directed by Gar- son Kanin, 1940, NR, 88 minutes; starring Cary Grant, Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott. In a classic Cary Grant screwball comedy a woman returns home, after being presumed dead for seven years, on the day of her husband’s sec- ond marriage . . . and hilarity ensues. (A re- make today would include a blow-up doll!?)
1/29/13 — Gaslight, directed by George Cukor, 1944, approved, 114 minutes; star- ring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman and An- gela Lansbury. A husband with a dark secret, a beautiful wife and his need to protect his secret leads to a pretense to drive his wife insane. The good old days, when men could do almost any- thing with impunity. Ingrid Bergman won her first Oscar for her portrayal of the suffering wife in this gothic mystery.
The Northern Arizona University Interna- tional Film Series has a new theme for Spring 2013; “Asia: Identity and Agency.” Each film shows on Wednesday nights at 7PM in room
120 of the Liberal Arts Building and are free! Join in a rousing discussion after as each film is introduced by a scholar from the community.
1/23/13 — United Red Army, directed by Koji Wakamatsu, 2007, Japan, NR, 190 minutes. In an epic film of Japan’s revolutionary and evolu-
tionary history, auteur Wakamatsu depicts the infamous episode of Japan’s radical left-wing student movement. Using archival footage, non actors, Wakamatsu shows the political un- rest of the 1960s. The film shows the transition of young people into militant activists seek- ing to overthrow their old world order. Two radical groups form the URA (United Red Army) and go to the mountains to train. Once in the mountains, these groups descend into anar- chy and murder as human nature unfolds in a typical universal pattern of hierarchy. Weaving documentary and drama URA comes to a thrill- ing climax when all hell breaks loose in the cli- mactic standoff.
1/30/13 Ajami, directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, 2009, Israel, NR, 120 minutes. A bold new crime drama set in the margins of the Arab ghetto of the city of Jaffa, Palestinians, Arab Muslims, Christians and Jews inhabit the world of the film. Ajami is an urban neighbor- hood as deadly as the Gaza Strip. When a Bed- ouin extortionist is gunned down in self-de- fense, a teenager is mistakenly killed in retribu- tion and an entire Arab family faces extinction. As enemies and neighbors in Ajami, the inhab- itants must risk death each day attempting to survive life in a worn torn city. Nominated as the Best Foreign Language film for the Oscars in 2009.
The Sedona International Film Festival brings a nice slate of innovative programming to the Mary D. Fisher Theatre in Sedona in Janu- ary. Clearly gearing up for their 19th film festival in February they continue to expand their hori- zons with a wonderful selection of films, ballets and talks.

1/9/13 — The Eye of the Storm also plays at Harkins Theatre in Flagstaff on Wednesday night and filmmakers Matthew Goodwin and Andrea Houchard provide thoughtful com- mentary at the end of the screening.

1/21/13 — La Fille Mal Gaudee Ballet from the Royal Ballet.

The Prescott Film Festival presents Korinna Sehringer on 1/8/13 at the Prescott Public Li- brary for a free workshop between 4 – 5:30PM in the Founder’s Suite. Korinna will share her journey as a filmmaker, working in over 120 films and advertising productions in 18 coun- tries. She’ll also talk about her film “Shouting Secrets” being presented the following evening.
1/9/13 — Shouting Secrets at Yavapai College of Performing Arts Center (YCPAC) at 6:30PM. Directed by Korinna Sehringer, who will be present for a Q&A after the screening, shot this film in Arizona! Shouting Secrets tells the tale of a Native American family re-uniting when the matriarch falls seriously ill. The family is forced to confront their past as their mother brings them together for one last memorable reunion. Beautifully shot in Arizona around the Four Corners this film has an incredible universal story that is wrapped in a very particular cul- ture. Check out why it’s been winning awards everywhere!
1/27/13 — Starting today at the YCPAC the Prescott Film Festival will kick off their presen- tation of the 2013 Oscar nominated films! Film titles and screening times not available at press time, but check out: PrescottFilmFestival.com for exact time and dates of upcoming films! This series will culminate with the Academy Awards Broadcast on 2/24/13 on the big screen at YCPAC, with a pre-screening cocktail party fundraiser for Prescott Film Festival and Per- forming Arts Charitable Endowment.
