My Screwy Heart by Marlys Kubicek is among the artist’s “Heart” series at Wil McNabb’s this January.
creations.
“For this show, I will have 4 pieces on dis-
play: Compression, A Model, Wish, and Artifi- cial Connection,” Ms. Simons tells me. “In all of the pieces, I am working with the female form bounded or constrained by some sort of suggested structure, blueprint, or other framing device.
“I’m a painter, but I also work with a vari- ety of other media-collaged paper, Plexiglas, screws, wood. Because of my interdisciplin- ary practice the end-product takes the form of wall pieces as well as sculpture, and even pieces that walk the line between the two.”
“Because I am an artist as well as a critical writer and social justice advocate, I think of my work as a prompt. I want it to be visually appealing in a way that allows my audience to linger with it on an aesthetic level, but I also want a message to surface during that engagement. Maybe that message prompts the viewer to think about their identity, or their role in the identity of others, or maybe that message prompts them to start a con- versation with someone in the gallery or later on.”
“Underneath it All” opens with a reception on January 12, 2013, at Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 North Fort Valley Road Flag- staff, from 6 to 8PM and will remain on dis- play until February 16, 2013.

EMERGING ARTISTS
This January, Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy will be displaying works of art at Brandy’s Restaurant for the 14th year in a row. Last week I paid a visit to FALA and talked with a few of the many students who are enthusiastic about their art.
Rachel Eckert, 17 and a senior at FALA, tells me about the mixed media projects
she’s been working on so far this school year. “I’m trying to incorporate into my work things that are important to me, like my values and things I’m interested in going into, especially
things to do with science and nature.”
A foreign exchanged student, Ulrike Vogel, has been in the US for about four months, and is visiting from Germany. “I like it a lot,” she tells me when I ask about her experience in Flagstaff so far. “I’ve done a lot more art here than I’ve done in Germany because I have a lot more time. I get a lot of different things to try. My favorite class is
drawing and printmaking.”
“I’m more of a dancer,” Audrey Collette,
16, tells me. “For my whole life I’ve danced. Fairly recently I’ve started doing other forms of art more. I’ve gotten more into art as another way of expressing myself. I really enjoy all kinds of art. Mixed media is cool because it brings together so many different mediums. I probably like painting the most though.
“The retablos we just did were a really good project. It was my first positive experience with mixed media. Mine was a picture of the universe in this big frame. I made a hand mold from my friend’s hand. I painted it gold and wrote a quote on it. The hand was touching the center of the solar system.
“It represents how we’re all often feeling re- ally tiny when we look up at the sky. We’re so tiny and unimportant, but at the same time the piece was about the connection to the universe. We’re all connected and we’re all pretty big even though we are really small. We can be a huge part of things.”
The artwork of Flagstaff Arts and Lead- ership students will be on display at Bran- dy’s Restaurant, 1500 E. Cedar, January 11 through February 4, 2013. A closing Recep- tion will be held January 31, from 5 to 7PM.
