Ah March. Glorious March. With spring flowers already in bloom from this ever-extending Indian Summer, we sum up this month with visions of shamrocks and shillelaghs, road trips and longer days.
But we mustn’t forget the Ides of March, a day remembered as an ouster, al- beit a bloody one, of a Caesar who perhaps had a little too much ego for his own good. With a dying gasp of “Et tu, Brute?” the man whose name still hugs the 7th month was bludgeoned to death by those he held authority over.
Hours before this magazine went to press, just as Justices of the Supreme Court were ruling against a man barred from protesting near military bases, an- other man stood up in the Court’s gallery and shouted: “Money is not speech! Corporations are not people! Overturn Citizens United.” Quickly hustled out of the Court, he was charged with breaking a federal statute which groups “fire- arms and fireworks” with “speech and objectionable language.”
Say what you will about the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, which al- lowed limitless spending by corporations on the elections of the representatives of the people. But know this: the $6,285,557,223 (yes, $6.2 billion in the 2012 na- tional election cycle alone) sure could buy a lot of infrastructure, a whole bunch of education, and a cornucopia of well-being for the nation’s future.
Certainly Caesar would’ve taken note of such a vast treasury — think of all the aqueducts! — if only he had to think about elections.
Agus dea-luck a thabhairt duit! Charles Seiverd
