Aside from illustrations and comics, most of his artwork is acrylic. With a preference towards working with canvas or murals, Mr. Dia says if an idea grabs his attention he works with other materials. He could be painting and re-fabricating a doll or painting on wood and he expresses an interest in painting on rusted metal.
“I’m pretty much a full-time painter these days and hope to improve with conception and execution,” Mr. Dia says. “I love the finished paintings, it’s just that doesn’t happen sometimes due to new inspiration or frustration.” He says that when art is made there is almost always something invested in it. He uses the terms, “evocation,”
“invocation” or “divination” to describe such an investment.
“Art is a window, dimensional variations, communication even of non-ideas, and
posterity,”Mr. Dia says. He compares art to having a child; it eventually gets away from you. Over the past 20 years, his paintings have made it into the homes of his friends and family. He says even if he outlives his work or if they are left out to fade in the sunlight, he loves the art and believes in the statement, “It’s not art until somebody pays for it.” He feels this statement carries more than one interpretation, meaning that even if the art is given away, the artists themselves paid for it.
In the future, Mr. Dia sees his work only improving. He hopes to display his work in new spaces with incorporated music to set the atmosphere and tone of his art. He is also considering starting up an Etsy page where art connoisseurs can find his work and purchase it online.
Mr. Dia’s creature the Bunnymaggot will be illustrated in three separate pieces throughout Rendezvous given the space and curator’s choice. Along with the Bunnymaggot, some other psychedelic, “dream or flashback inspired” creatures will be on display. Mr. Dia’s paintings will premiere on July 3, for the First Friday ArtWalk at Rendezvous located within the Hotel Monte Vista on San Francisco Street.
FULL MOON ART AND YOGA
On July 1, 7PM-9PM, a Full Moon Yoga Benefit will take place on the roof of the Whyld Ass Restaurant, 101 S. San Francisco Street. Flagstaff Yoga teacher Kori Moore has planned a two hour evening yoga asana, mantra, live painting and music as the sun sets and the full moon rises.
This all-levels Hatha (Sun/Moon) practice will incorporate both sun and moon salutations and transition into a restorative practice under the moon and stars. Live music by Matt Bingham will serenade the sun-inspired flow at the beginning of the practice, while Cloe Premeaux creates on the scene with watercolor on paper. Live harmonium music and devotional chant creating an atmosphere for a deeply relaxing svasana.
This group of teachers trained together at Vertical Soul Yoga Teacher trainings and now collaborate with their gifts to give back to the community they love. All donations ($10 or more suggested) go directly to “La La,” and her family. La La is a very brave three year old girl who has been fighting cancer for the last year. Ms. Moore met La La when she had her older brother and sister in her classroom at STAR school.
Please arrive early to get a space to practice and bring a donation, yoga mat, water bottle, and blanket. An abundance of gratitude to Whyld Ass for donating the rooftop space for the evening. 480/266-1056
