Summertime HandS-On art
Summer is a time where finding a sense of adventure and trying new things is on the to-do list; and the Flagstaff Arts Council is providing the public with Sum- mer Art Workshops at Coconino Center for the Arts. These classes are artist-led by well-known locals and are available throughout the months of July and August.
By collaborating with Art35N, the Arts Council has interwoven these workshops into the program, A New Latitude, which runs from June 9 to August 6, and in- cludes an art exhibition of Art35N artists, demonstrations, studio tours, and artist- led workshops (categorized by date in the “A List” calendar on page 32-33).
For more details on pricing, workshop descriptions and to register, visit flagartsCouncil.org or call 928-779-2300. Coconino Center for the Arts is located at 2300 North Fort Valley Road, Flagstaff, and open to the public Tues- day-Saturday from 11AM-5PM.
a Play Of CardS
A riveting game of cards, nursing home residents, life metaphors? Flagstaff’s Theatrikos Theatre Company presents their latest production The Gin Game, a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. James Dugan debuts as the director for this two- character play, starring local actors Kelly Gibbs and Stan Sutherland.
The Gin Game is a story of Fonsia Dorsey, an elder woman residing in a “home for the aged” sulking in loneliness. She finds her quiet life disturbed by fellow resi- dent, Weller Marin, who teaches her the rules of Gin Rummy. While it may seem they grow to like the company, the game reveals much about their regret-filled lives. The irritation escalates as Fonsia wins every hand, resulting in an unsettling confrontation.
“This story has moments of levity and tenderness between Fonsia and Weller, but ultimately they’re on opposing sides of an all-out war,” Mr. Dugan says.
Four performances will be held at the Doris Harper-White Community Play- house July 1-2 at 7:30PM and July 2-3 at 2PM. Ticket prices range from $12-$14 and can be purchased online, by phone, or at the theatre Box Office from 12-6PM Mon- days, Wednesdays and Fridays, and two hours before each performance. The Doris Harper-White Community Playhouse is located at 11 West Cherry Avenue, Flagstaff. For tickets and more information visit theatrikos.com or call 928-774-1662.
