OUT OF ORDER
A night of hanky-panky gone wrong is where Theatrikos’ latest production be- gins. Out of Order, by Ray Cooney, follows Richard Willey, a US Congressman through his evening of “amour gone wrong.” When he tries to spend the night with an adminis- trative aide from the opposing side, a chain of events unfolds an evening that leaves Richard and his assistant George trying to keep their names out of the headlines.
“This is my 12th year volunteering at The- atrikos but only the 2nd play I’ve directed,” says director Dennis Hattem. “The last one was The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged, another comedy. Since the majority of my experience with the theater has been on the acting end — nearly 20 plays now — I am often asked which I like better, acting or directing. I can’t say I ‘like’ one better than the other, I feel honored to be able to participate in any aspect of the theatrical arts. Although, it seems that when I’m directing, I wish I was acting, and vice versa. Luckily, in this play, I’m doing both.”
I ask Mr. Hattem about the cast of this comedy, “I love having a cast like this; some seasoned actors, some new ones, some older, some younger,” he says. “The newer actors get some tips from the older ones but the younger ones bring a fresh vision and excitement to the stage.”
“As for the play, it’s hilarious,” Mr. Hat- tem continues. “How can you go wrong making fun of political sex scandals? The play was originally written in England dur- ing Margaret Thatcher’s tenure, but we’ve moved the play to present day Washington DC, with lots of contemporary American jokes. The playwright, Ray Cooney, makes each character an instantly recognizable stereotype; the pompous congressman, the stuffy manager of the hotel, the money grabbing waiter; they each have their own, one might say, lovable quirks.”
