October is a time for pumpkin-smashing and the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival October 9-13. Ron Tuckman and John Tveten, co-directors of the festival, grace the North-
land with the finest documentary films from around the world. Now in its 10th year, they are in full stride, with an abundance of planned events and community access. New venues also grace the expansion: Orpheum Theater, Theatrikos, Rende- vous, Flagstaff Bike Revolution and Fire Creek Coffee Com- pany. Our cumulative cinephilic-IQ expands exponentially as the world comes to Flagstaff’s doorstep for a few days!
Said Mr. Tuckman: “There were nearly 250 entries and a selec- tion committee of eight watched films for over two months to be able to decide on films for this year.”
Over 70 were selected, including Maiden Trip, Town Hall, Xmas Without China, North of the Sun, The Ridge, Narco Cultura and the über highlight film: Blood Brother, which won the Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance.
Mr. Tveten chimed in about Bidder 70 and mentioned that George and Martha Gage, the filmmakers, will come with their Sundance award winning film for a thought provoking discus- sion. “Tim DeChristopher committed an act that would define patriotism in our time, igniting a spirit of civil disobedience in the name of climate justice.” Mr. DeChristopher went to prison for two years for bidding on public lands “given” to large corpo- rate interests for pennies on the dollar — it’s a compelling story.
