A PERFECT CIRCLE, A KNOWING LENS by Ellen Jo Roberts
“Egypt at a Glance” is the current exhibit on display at Clarkdale’s Corner Gallery.
Featuring photographic work by Willis Peterson, the show details a 1990 Egyptian adventure along the banks of the Nile. In addi- tion to famed artifacts, golden sarcophagi and important historic landmarks, the show also includes scenes of daily Egyptian life such as riverside laundry, and beachgoers under col- orful umbrellas.
Currently retired to the sleepy historic town of Clarkdale, Mr. Peterson was born in Colorado but spent most of his life an Arizona resident. He has been an avid photographer for three quarters of a century, ever since re- ceiving his first camera as a gift for his 14th birthday.
A long-time photojournalist and feature writer for the Arizona Republic, he enjoyed an illustrious free-lance career with Arizona High- ways throughout the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, with dozens of published portfolios and hundreds of supporting pictorials. Capturing images of wildlife required inventive equipment adap- tations to capture fleeting moments, during times “before the camera did everything for you, like they do now,” he jokes.
Much was learned from experimentation, trial and error, making Mr. Peterson a bit of a forerunner in the field of wildlife photography. He is an avid traveler and his body of work showcases many photo assignments from far- flung regions across the globe, across several continents. With his background in photojour- nalism, his images are honest and engaging, a well-composed blend of light, shadow and contrast. His previous career as a teacher is evident as he eagerly discusses the elements at work in a successful image.
“Egypt at a Glance” will be on display at the Corner Gallery, adjacent to the Clarkdale Park, though November.
A RIVER BY ANY OTHER NAME by Ellen Jo Roberts
“A River Runs Through Us,” the Verde Land Preservation Institute’s “Verde Artist Chal- lenge” art exhibition, continues to wind its way throughout the Verde Watershed. The series of works, created by 25 juried artists after a springtime kayak adventure, shares an awareness and stirs sentiment about the Verde River and its importance to our region.
Beginning in Old Town Cottonwood, the show continued on to Camp Verde, and had weekend detours to Verde River Day and the Sedona Arts Festival. On November 5th it ar- rives for a two-month installation at the Clark- dale Library. In the New Year, it will continue its tour to the Phoenix Audubon Society, the Sedona Library and the Verde Birding & Na- ture Festival before its May finale at Prescott’s
Raven Café.
“A River Runs Through Us” is auctioning the art to benefit preservation of public lands in the Verde Valley. You can bid online through May by visiting verdeartistchallenge.org
