Prescott — Co-art directors of The Raven Cafe, Betsy Dally and Maria Lynam, have organized a block-buster show for the holiday season. “Encore” opens on Monday, Nov. 21 and runs through Sunday, January 8. The opening reception will be on Wed., November 30 from 5-7pm. Featuring the art of 30 artists that have exhibited at the Raven over the last eighteen months, a wide variety of media will be shown: digital art, photogra- phy, oil, mixed media and assemblages.
Among the featured artists are Carolyn Dunn, Annette Olson and Betsy Dally, who had eclectic and successful exhibits this year. They were asked to share their personal experi- ences about creating art.
Annette Olson is a mixed media artist who primarily works in acrylic. She collages vari- ous materials into her art for textural interest. She explains, “I often use metallic leaf as an accent. For the past year, I have been exploring the use of silhouetted figures that I hope represents meaningful people in the viewers’ life. As I work on a piece, I seldom have a concrete idea of what will happen. Interestingly enough, the story unfolds on the canvas as I add layers of paint and paper. As each piece unfolds, it resolves over time.”
Carolyn Dunn’s photography has evolved into her concept of photographic art. Dunn says, “it is a blend of traditional subject matter and non-traditional techniques that I use in Photoshop CS6. Some of my images that may seem simplistic, are actually multi-layered montages created with textured backgrounds, artistic filters, and blending modes. My goal is to create art that speaks to me. Hopefully, it will speak to others.”
Betsy Dally is not only one of the art directors for the Raven Cafe, but she is a talented printmaker and painter. She discusses her evolution as an artist: “For quite a few years
I mainly studied Printmaking, which includes such techniques as carving relief plates into lino or wood, monoprinting, etching, aquatint, drypoint, screen-printing, and digital printing. Once I became comfortable with the various ways of creating a print, I began to experiment and layer multiple types of printmaking in one piece.”
“My favorite combination is to use relief cuts, monotypes and chine colle, which is a collaging technique done on the printing press. Recently I have been incorporating all that I have learned into acrylic paintings. I enjoy the spontaneity that acrylics bring to my work, and the freedom to incorporate other media.”
