More than 60 award-winning artists and presenters from the Hopi villages in Northern Arizona gather to honor and celebrate the art and culture of the Hopi people. A Fourth of July tradition since the 1930s, and the old- est Hopi show in the world, the Hopi Festival of Arts & Culture features authentic food, artist demonstrations, an artist marketplace, educa- tional programs, musical performances by art- ist in residence Ed Kabotie and his band Tha
‘Yoties; dancing by the Tsootro Hopi Dance Group and a children’s craft area. Mr. Kabotie will be presenting a new piece called The Jour- ney: Path to Balance, which depicts nine stages of Hopi clowning, and is a prototype for a mu- ral project that he is working on at the muse- um as a tribute to his father, Michael Kabotie. Mr. Kabotie gives a lecture on The Journey on Tuesday July 1, beginning with a musical per- formance at 5:30PM and lecture to follow at 6:30PM in the Branigar Chase Discovery Center. thE ARtists’ CoALition of Flagstaff fea- tures the fine art photography of Tyanna Bur- ton for the month of July. Focusing on land- scapes that extend beyond Northern Arizona and often capture the moody moments of an impending storm, her piece September in the Tetons was recently a top 100 finalist out of more than 3,000 entries. Also on display at ACF will be a new member exhibit of a wide selec- tion of mediums including fiber art, glass, jew- elry and more. MountAin oAsis showcases the creative evolution of ACF member Dolores Ziegler. Ms. Ziegler will be exhibiting a collection of her work from the 1980s to today, tracking her progression from handmade paper to watercolor, collage and acrylics in both a contemporary and traditional style. Ms. Ziegler’s exhibit will be up for the month of July at Mountain Oasis International Restaurant, 11 E. Aspen Street.
PostCARDs FRoM thE iRon CAMERA is a new exhibit at the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark in Petrified Forest Na- tional Park. Inspired by their tenure as park artists in residence, Califor- nia artists Kim Garrison and Steve Radosevich set about capturing the landscape with a hand-built cast iron camera. The prints were developed using a combination of traditional darkroom techniques and digital ed- iting, then colored with watercolor, ink and pencil. The resulting imagery reflects the surrealism of the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest itself through the combined mediums of photography, drawing, painting and collage.
